Sally Hawkins was charming and pretty and nervous when she accepted her award. How nice it was to see this maverick actor, member of an ensemble ( of dir. Mike Leigh ) up there against the big guns and winning! It says good things for Leigh's style of directing and the independent spirit. En-rah-ha!

For more Mickey Rourke, check out his excellent performance as detective Harry Angel in British director Alan Parker's thriller "Angel Heart" (1987), based on American author William Hjortsberg's 1978 novel "Falling Angel."

I just added the Golden Globe Awards to our list of links on the lower right hand side of the blog. Check out the winners, and while you're at it, keep your eyes on the Academy Awards link, too!

Hooray for Sally Hawkins, worthy winner of a Golden Globes award for best actress! These awards are from the Foreign Press Assn and she beat out some talented big names. The categories are different than the Oscars and covers tv as well. Nice to see an ensembe player win.

Random chance certainly may provide an interruption to a cycle, allowing new possibilities.

It's important for us to take advantage of opportunities to make change, and to help others make the change they desire.

Much better to encourage chance, though, if one can afford the dice.

While noodling about on line, I found an interview with the actor who portrayed the troubled driving instructor. I had not realized that Leigh works with an ensemble of people and often comes up with dialog on the fly as the actors improv. What a wonderful way to work, esp. from this actor's point of view. Anyway, the actor mentioned that he came up with Enraha in rehearsal as in improv. Could very well be a "sounds like" that popped into his head and dovetails with the other comment from Bruce C.

At the discussion after the film, "Happy Go Lucky" the comments of the driving instructor were looked up and not found. I believe he was saying "Amun Ra." Making reference to the Egyptian sun god.

To some extent, the choices Georgiana had to make back in 18th century England still exist in a partnership. While arranged marriages aren't common in modern Western society and people may easily fall in love, it isn't love alone that makes relationships work, but a complex constellation of skills that both ensures the longevity of the partnership and meets each partner's needs. If only it were so simple as gambling, perhaps the odds would be better.

One Halloween I watched "The Ox-Bow Incident" and the "Twilight Zone" episode "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street." Both speak to the dangers of guilt by association, lawless justice and fear-mongering. Given the role that fear plays in politics these days, I might even revisit these.
